Boiler Types
Combi Boilers
A combination boiler, often called a ‘combi’ boiler is both a high-efficiency central heating boiler AND water heater in a single compact unit.
Combi boilers are ideal when space for a hot water tank and a cold water tank is limited as they heat water directly from the mains when you turn on a tap.
Other benefits include hot water being delivered at mains pressure and energy-efficiency as water is heated instantly rather than being heated and stored for later.
Look for:
No hot water tank
Boiler goes on when you turn on the hot tap
System Boilers
System boilers differ from 'combi' boilers as they need a cylinder for storing hot water.
Though they need more space as they require a water tank, the benefit of this is a constant supply of hot water to any number of taps at the same time.
Some of the water system components are built into the boiler, so there is no need for a loft water tank as there is with conventional boilers which save on space, especially for people with no, or limited loft space. Becuase of the lack of water tank in the loft, they can also be easier and less time consuming and costly to install.
Unlike combi boilers, system boilers are also compatible with solar water heating systems.
Look for:
Hot water tank
But no cold water tank in the loft
Conventional Boilers
Conventional boilers (sometimes called traditional, regular or heat only boilers) are perfect for homes that already have a traditional heating and hot water system linked to a separate hot water cylinder.
These boilers also need a cold water storage tank in the loft to feed the hot water cylinder and a tank to maintain the water level of the central heating system.
Unlike combi boilers, conventional boilers are also compatible with solar water heating systems.

Boiler issues
Boiler Kettling
If you hear loud banging noises coming from your boiler, you may have kettling. There's no need to panic, as the boiler won't explode, but you should deal with the problem before the boiler breaks entirely and needs replacing. Often kettling can be fixed with a system clean or Powerflush, and this will save you on a more expensive boiler repair or possible replacement.
Low boiler pressure
your boiler may have a pressure gauge to display the pressure. Low pressure will likely hinder your boiler's performance. Many things can cause low boiler pressure, including a leak in your system, faulty pressure relief valve, radiators needing bleeding, or sludge buildup.
Radiators not warming up
Cold patches in rads is reasonably common and where the cold patch is, will tell you the cause. Air trapped in the system will act as a bubble in the radiator, and the cold patch will be at the top. If the cold section is at the bottom, it is more often a buildup of sludge.
Banging whistling gurgling noises coming from the boiler
A noisy boiler can be worrying. However, a noisy boiler is a fairly common issue. The type of sounds your boiler makes will help identify the problem. Common causes include; low water pressure, air in the system, faulty pump, or kettling. A boiler check and repair should be carried out before the issues become irreversible.
Boiler turns off
When a boiler turns itself off, there may be a blockage in the system that restricts water flow. This will cause low pressure in the system. Alternatively, the pump could also be faulty and isn't circulating the water.
Frozen condensation pipes
All boilers heat water, and the steam that they generate from this process has to escape. The steam leaves the boiler through a small pipe that allows the steam produced to escape safely and turn to water as it cools. In cold weather, the water may freeze and cause a blockage in this pipe. For more information go to the frozen condensate pipe page.
Intermittent hot water
If your boiler is having issues with heat or hot water, the problem should be diagnosed by a heating engineer. The issues could be caused by a broken thermostat, low water levels, airlocks, broken diaphragms, faulty motorised valves, etc. Our boiler repair experts can diagnose the problem for you.
Pilot light keeps switching off
The pilot light of a gas boiler, can in some circumstances turn off - possibly due to the gas supply not being able to reach your boiler. The first step is to check other gas appliances, such as a hob, to make sure it isn't the mains gas supply that is the issue. Our boiler repair engineer can help you rectify the problem safely.
Unreliable Thermostat
thermostats can lose accuracy over time, or may become damaged or broken with age. You will likely see temperature changes that you didn't set, or perhaps the temperature may be stuck at a particular setting, or not come on at all. If you've been thinking about it for a while, it might be time to upgrade to a smart thermostat.
Leaking and Dripping
A leak in the central heating system will cause issues such as low boiler pressure in your system, as well as water damage to the surrounding area of the leak. We need to see if the leak is coming from the boiler itself, or is somewhere else in the system. Our boiler repair engineer can diagnose the problem, and we can also detect leaks in the system.
