Two and three-port motorised valves keep your central heating system running as it should, so when they break, you notice it. That's because the motorised pump works with the boiler and thermostat to send hot water where it is needed - either to the radiators or to the taps/hot water tank.
When the valve breaks, it can get stuck in one position and only send hot water one way, which means you may have hot water for your radiators, but not your taps or vice versa.

How Motorised Valves Work?
The motorised valve has a pipe and a motorised head that sits on top. The valve sits in position A but needs the motor to pull the valve into position B or C. See diagram below.
2-Port Motorised Valve
The two-port valve is similar to a three-port. But unlike the tee of a three-port, a two-port looks like a coupler or isolating valve. And the valve controls whether the water flows through or not. Two 2-port valves are usually required in an S-plan arrangement.
3-Port Motorised Valve
The three-port valve looks like a tee, but it has a metal or plastic box sitting on top that contains a motor. The tee has three routes for water, or "ports"; one for water from the boiler, one to the hot water tank, and one to the central heating system.
When the valve has no power, it will block port A as the spring pulls it to that side. The motor pulls the ball valve from port A to the other side blocking port B. It can also be positioned in the middle to allow water to flow through ports A & B simultaneously.
