An InSinkErator is a well-built machine, and most of the faults we get called to are repairable. Before you start pricing up a replacement unit, it is worth having an engineer look at it — a jammed flywheel, a tripped reset, a perished sink flange seal or a failed dishwasher connection are all straightforward fixes, and all of them look and sound like a dead disposer.
We have been servicing in-sink food waste disposers across Harrow, Ruislip and the Hillingdon borough for years, we carry the common parts in the van, and we work on every InSinkErator model sold in the UK as well as Franke, Maxmatic, McAlpine and Rangemaster units.

Before you call: switch the unit off at the fused spur, then check the red reset button underneath. If it clicks in and the unit runs, it had simply overloaded. If it trips again immediately, there is a jam or an electrical fault — leave it and give us a ring. Never put your hand into the chamber, even with the power off.

SERVICING & INSTALLATION
Annual service
A service visit on a working unit covers:
- Full strip and clean of the grind chamber and splash baffle
- Descale of the chamber — West London is a hard water area and scale shortens unit life
- Inspection and re-torque of the mounting assembly
- Check of all three leak points: flange, dishwasher inlet, discharge elbow
- Test of the reset, air switch and electrical supply
- Check of the waste run and trap downstream
NEW INSTALLATION
Fitting a disposer is not just a plumbing job — it needs a correctly rated, switched electrical supply, and the sink waste has to be reworked to suit. We handle both. If you are choosing a unit, we are happy to advise on sizing before you buy; undersized units are the most common cause of repeat jams.
Hard water note: across Harrow, Ruislip, Northwood and the Hillingdon borough the water is hard, and limescale builds inside the grind chamber faster than the national average. Units in this area benefit from servicing more often than the manufacturer’s general guidance suggests.

Why is my InSinkErator humming but not grinding?
The flywheel is jammed. The motor is receiving power and trying to turn, but something hard is wedged against the impellers. Turn it off at the wall immediately — running a jammed unit burns out the motor and turns a small repair into a replacement.
Where is the reset button on an InSinkErator?
On the underside of the unit, at the centre of the base — a small red button that pops out when the overload trips. Push it firmly back in. If it will not stay in, or it trips again as soon as you switch on, there is an underlying fault.
Is it worth repairing an InSinkErator or should I replace it?
Jams, leaks, seals, switches and hose failures are all worth repairing at any age. The deciding factor is the motor: if the windings have overheated on an older unit, a replacement is usually the better value. We will tell you honestly which one you are looking at before committing you to anything.
How long does an InSinkErator last?
Ten to fifteen years is typical for a domestic unit that has been used sensibly and flushed with plenty of cold water. Hard water, undersized models and grinding fibrous or starchy waste all shorten that considerably.
Do you carry InSinkErator parts?
We carry the common consumables — mounting gaskets, sink flange seals, outlet elbows, dishwasher inlet hoses and clips, air switch assemblies — so most jobs are finished on the first visit. Motors and grind components are ordered in where a repair makes economic sense.
Can you fit a disposer I have bought myself?
Yes. We will check it is right for your sink and waste run before we start, and fit it with the correct electrical supply and waste connections.
Do you cover commercial kitchens?
We do. Note that in England and Wales the rules around food waste disposers in commercial premises have been tightening, so it is worth a conversation about whether a disposer is the right answer for your site before you commit.
